Hi My name is Jane and I would like to share my life story of how I changed my child and she avoided being truant. It all started when I first paid fees and thought that all will be well for my child. As she progressed in age, I never took the time to counsel and guide her towards the right direction. I always thought my main task as a parent is to pay fees. All the other tasks of disciplining and encouragement were left to the teachers. Failing to attend school became so frequent that it called for my attention. As I took the time to talk to her, she could ignore and throw tantrums that never went well with me. Anger boiling in me, I always thought caning and spanking could be the best way of disciplining her. It never worked and had to figure out the next course of action. We visited counsellor after counsellor for guidance to no avail. The fruitless efforts finally bore fruits when I started encouraging her to study smart in school. At one time, I took her out for a picnic and it really motivated her. It was at this time I used my experience as a parent to encourage her to be a disciplined student in school. Very motivated by my submission, she shed tears of joys and said, “mum I will never stray again”. I embraced her with a motherly touch and she really got stuck in emotions for the rest of the day. After she went back to school after the break, a change of behaviour was evident by her teachers and her performance shot up.

Hi, thanks a bunch for sharing your insights in this forum. It is not only encouraging but also giving one a new lease of life. Motivation is categorised in two flavours; intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. When the child is motivated through small tokens and handouts by their teachers, it is common knowledge that performance always rises up. Teachers are surrogate parents who spend much of the time with children in school. As they motivate the child, the child tends to focus ahead and feels a sense of ownership and belonging. Through teachers and parents cooperation, the child tends to become an all round being who is poised for great things.
