Why are so many twins born after infertility treatment?

ertain drugs and procedures greatly increase the chances of multiple births.
For example, clomiphene citrate results in an 8-10 percent twin rate in those who conceive. This drug usually is not associated with births involving three or more fetuses. Injectable fertility drugs (such as human menopausal gonadotropins or folliclestimulating hormone) may result in many eggs maturing within a single menstrual cycle. About 15 percent of pregnancies induced by these hormones result in twins. Five percent involve three or more infants. The risk depends on the dose, the patient's diagnosis and her response to the hormones.
In an IVF cycle, more than one embryo is usually transferred into the uterus to increase the likelihood that at least one will implant. However, whenever more than one embryo is transferred, there is the possibility of a multiple birth. According to recent CDC statistics, transferring two or three embryos increases the chance of pregnancy - as well as the chance of twins or triplets. Pregnancy rates decline when four or more embryos are transferred, but the chances of multiple births stay high.
"Some of the information I was naive about - like the multiple birth risks. After they found out it was triplets, they mentioned fetal reduction but didn't have a lot of information. The obstetrician gave us more information about the risks, saying we could lose them all, and that kind of scared us." MOTHER OF PREMATURE TRIPLETS WHO DIED SHORTLY AFTER BIRTH

Hi
In infertility treatment, like IVF, there is always a chance to have multiple births. This is because the doctor implants at least two or three embryos. The doctor does this purposely in order to generate a successful IVF. But, this leads to twins quite often. Chances of having twins also increase because of the fertility medicines the doctor prescribes.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most common type of ART. In this treatment, a fertilized egg or eggs are placed in the woman's uterus through the cervix. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI (say "ICK-see"). In a lab, your doctor injects one sperm into one egg. Some fertility problems are more easily treated than others. In general, as a woman ages, especially after age 35, her chances of getting pregnant go down. But her risk of miscarriage goes up.If you are 35 or older, your doctor may recommend that you skip some of the steps younger couples usually take. That's because your chances of having a baby decrease with each passing year. It's important to understand that even if you are able to get pregnant, no treatment can guarantee a healthy baby. On the other hand, scientists in this field have made many advances that have helped millions of couples have babies.

further,Because blastocysts have a significantly higher implantation potential than day 3 embryos, the physician can transfer only two embryos and keep pregnancy rates high (over 50% per egg retrieval procedure in some programs for women under age 40) and triplet pregnancy rates down in the 2% to 4% range.Fertility experts are appealing for a U-turn in the current rules against multiple embryo IVF implantations, after a new study has revealed that two embryos are better than one – especially for older women trying to conceive.I want to tell one thing more that according to researchers from the Medical Research Council in Bristol and the University of Glasgow, two embryos are better than a single embryo when increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy and live birth, despite previous claims that multiple embryos increase the risk of pregnancy and birth implications. And also spokesperson from the study said: “Greater freedom should be given to clinicians and patients to decide whether to transfer one or two embryos, according to prognostic indicators, such as maternal age.”However, the new study, published in The Lancet, is appealing for legislations to be relaxed by giving would-be-mothers “greater freedom” when deciding on whether to transform one or two embryos. They came to this conclusion after analysing the outcomes of 124,148 IVF cycles resulting in 33,514 live births. This is particularly encouraging for older women trying to conceive as it’s been proven that two embryos are more successful in women over the age of 40, as they carry less health risks than in younger women.

Moreover i want to tell some treatments for it also.Treatments for fertility problems in women depend on what may be keeping the woman from getting pregnant. Sometimes the cause isn't known.Problems with ovulating. Treatment may include taking medicine, such as:Clomiphene. It stimulates your ovaries to release eggs. Metformin. It's used to treat polycystic ovary syndrome.Unexplained infertility. If your doctor can't find out why you and your partner haven't been able to get pregnant, treatment may include: Clomiphene. Hormone injections. Insemination. Blocked or damaged tubes. If your fallopian tubes are blocked, treatment may include tubal surgery. EndometriosisEndometriosis . If mild to moderate endometriosis seems to be the main reason for your infertility, treatment may include laparoscopic surgery to remove endometrial tissue growth. This treatment may not be an option if you have severe endometriosis. For more information, see the topic Endometriosis. Treatment for the man Your doctor might recommend that you try insemination first. The sperm are collected and then concentrated to increase the number of healthy sperm for insemination. When initial treatments don't work Many couples who have problems getting pregnant arrive at a common point: They must decide whether they want to try assisted reproductive technology (ART). If fertilization occurs, the doctor puts the embryo into the woman's uterus.Your impulse may be to immediately begin with the most advanced and expensive treatments, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), thinking you'll get pregnant faster. But less expensive therapies, such as fertility drugs or surgery, are very effective. About 90 percent of couples are treated with drugs or surgery only. You have a number of choices, so work with your doctor to come up with a treatment plan, starting with the least invasive options first.
